“
“The year was 1987 and I was afraid. I spent four years preparing for this day, yet in many ways, it was a lifetime. Students were about to walk into Baker Middle School and I hoped I was ready. Had I created an inviting place for students to learn? Was I going to be able to control unruly students? Would my students like me? How would I handle students who came from a different culture? Would I? Could I? These and many more questions buzzed in my head as students walked into my first class.” – From Back to the classroom with Jon Bergmann
Over the past seven years, I’ve traveled 700,000 miles training school leaders and educators on six continents how to use “the operating system for mastery learning.” I’ve now returned to the classroom to teach high school science using mastery learning. I have many of the same feelings, thoughts, and questions I had back in 1987. In this new leg of the journey, I will be marrying the best pedagogy with the best technologies and putting into practice everything I’ve learned along the way. I know there will be ups and downs, and I will share my travails and triumphs as I come full circle — back to the heart of what it means to be a teacher. I hope you’ll join me.
